General informationA thigh lift involves raising the skin on the inside of the upper legs. If the skin lacks the elasticity to respond to a rapid reduction in the size of the thighs, the skin in this area can become loose following extreme weight loss or liposculpture.
ProcedureThe procedure is carried out by a plastic surgeon, and can take place under local anaesthetic used in combination with a sedative, or under general anaesthetic. In most cases, the procedure takes about an hour. A cut is made, running backwards from the groin, following the exact line of the skin fold. The excess skin is then removed. Sometimes, a combination procedure is undertaken, involving liposculpture immediately followed by a thigh lift. At the end of the procedure, the wound is neatly sewn up using dissolvable stitches.
RisksComplications are rare with this procedure. Most that do occur are of a general nature, such as bleeding and infection. There may be some impairment of feeling in the vicinity of the wound, however. Naturally, the utmost care is used during surgery in order to minimise these risks.
OutcomeFollowing the procedure, you will be fitted for elasticated trousers, which you will have to wear for a week. The skin will immediately feel tighter. For a few days, it may appear bluish and feel a little bruised. The scar is not very apparent and will generally heal up inconspicuously because of following your natural skin fold. After about three weeks, the wound should be fully healed and the skin will feel supple once more.
