General informationAgeing or weight loss can sometimes result in the sagging of the skin covering the buttocks or even the entire buttocks. These “saggy buttocks” can certainly mar the attractiveness of a person’s figure. A buttock lift, however, involves the removal of excess skin and makes the buttocks tighter again.
PreparationThe results of a buttock lift depend somewhat on the quantity of subcutaneous fat and to what degree the buttocks are sagging. Before the operation, you will receive a general physical examination. If you take certain medications such as aspirin, you will have to discontinue their use two weeks prior to the operation in order to reduce the risk of post-operative bleeding. Smoking cessation two weeks before the procedure is important as well since this will reduce the risk of poorly healing incisions.
The operationA buttock lift is conducted under local anaesthetic with sedation (you will be asleep). During the procedure, the skin covering the buttocks, along with the subcutaneous fatty tissue will be separated from the underlying tissues. The skin will then be pulled tight and the excess skin and subcutaneous fatty tissue will be removed. The skin and the fatty tissue will then be stitched as high as possible onto the gluteal muscle. The scar is limited to an inconspicuous place between the bikini line and the rest of your buttocks remains beautifully smooth. At the end of the procedure, two drains will be placed to drain off blood and fluids resulting from the incision. These tubes will be removed within two hours following the operation. You will also receive a compression garment (either a corset or a high, tightly fitting pair of pants) that fits over the buttocks and which you will wear for one to four weeks. The stitches are made of soluble material and will disappear on their own.
The risksAs with any operation, there are always the risks of post-operative bleeding and infection. The chance of infection is greater if there is a lot of subcutaneous fatty tissue. The buttocks can be temporarily numb after the operation. The risk that the incisions will heal poorly and even reopen increases sharply if you smoke.
RecoveryIt is important adhere to a programme of strict bed rest for the first day. You should not engage in any strenuous work or bend over for the first six weeks. You will need to wear the compression garment for one to four weeks. The total recovery period lasts six weeks; by that time, there should be no limitations in your movement and you can also participate in sports. It is also reassuring to know that you will probably not be bothered very much by pain after a buttock lift.
ResultsSmooth, tight buttocks. But don’t expect perfection. The scars will always be somewhat visible but since they are located within the bikini line, nobody else will notice them.
