Buttock augmentation

General information

When the buttocks (gluteus muscles) are inadequately developed, they can be so small or flat that they are no longer in balance with the rest of the body. Another problem with having small or flat buttocks is that clothing fails to fit this part of the body properly and usually simply “hangs”. A buttock augmentation involves the insertion of buttock implants under the gluteus muscles, thus giving the buttocks a fuller, rounder shape.

Preparation

The results of a buttock augmentation depend partially on the condition and elasticity of the skin. If the buttocks sag too much, a buttock lift would provide better results. Before the operation, you will receive a general physical examination. If you take certain medications such as aspirin, you will have to discontinue their use two weeks prior to the operation in order to reduce the risk of post-operative bleeding. Smoking cessation two weeks before the procedure is important as well since this will reduce the risk of poorly healing incisions.

The operation

A buttock augmentation is conducted under local anaesthetic with sedation (you will be asleep). During the procedure, a space will be created beneath the gluteus muscles where the implant will be inserted. The scar is limited to an inconspicuous place between the buttocks next to the tailbone, within the natural crease underneath the gluteal cheek. The rest of your buttocks remains beautifully full and smooth. At the end of the procedure, two drains will be placed to drain off blood and fluids resulting from the incision. These tubes will be removed within two hours following the operation. You will also receive a compression garment (either a corset or a high, tightly fitting pair of pants) that fits over the buttocks and which you will wear for four weeks. The stitches are made of soluble material and will disappear on their own.

The risks

As with any operation, there are always the risks of post-operative bleeding and infection. The buttocks can be temporarily numb after the operation. The risk that the incisions will heal poorly and even reopen increases sharply if you smoke. Theoretically, buttock implants can shift out of position, but the chance of this happening is extremely small if you comply with the limitations during the first weeks following the operation.

Recovery

It is important adhere to a programme of strict bed rest for the first two weeks, being sure to avoid sitting on your buttocks, to stand while eating and to sleep on your stomach. After two weeks, you may cautiously start sitting on your buttocks. You may start driving a car after three weeks. You should not engage in any strenuous work or bend over for the first six weeks. By that time, the recovery period is over and any movements are possible again. Engaging in sports, however, should wait until three months after the operation. You should wear the compression garment for four weeks. You will receive a prescription for an antibiotic that you should take for 5 days to prevent infection. Remember to receive any future injections in a place other than your buttocks in conjunction with the risk of damage to the buttock implants.

Results

Full, round smooth-looking buttocks. But don’t expect perfection. The scar can still be a bit visible between the cheeks. The scar is located within the bikini line and will be invisible to others.
