Cheekbone augmentation

General information

Having more emphasised cheekbones or fuller cheeks that are in balance with the rest of the facial features is possible by having a cheekbone augmentation performed that involves the insertion of an implant. This procedure helps persons with underdeveloped cheekbones or sunken cheeks to improve their facial proportions. The results are permanent but the implants are easy to remove if needed.

Who will benefit from this procedure?

Each person’s facial proportions are unique. This procedure can correct or emphasise the proportion between the cheekbones/cheeks and the rest of the facial features. Underdeveloped cheekbones or sunken cheeks disturb the balance of facial proportions. Often, it is only a matter of a few millimetres that are the cause of this imbalance. Inserting an implant is a simple and very effective method of correcting this disproportion.

What to expect

A cheekbone augmentation provides an improvement but not perfection. Neither should you expect that such an operation will solve any social problems or problems associated with a relationship.

Preparation

Much of the preparation for the procedure deals with determining which kind of cheekbone implant is most suitable for you. Because there are various kinds of implants, a patient can choose to emphasise the cheekbone only or to emphasise the cheekbone and make the cheek fuller as well. The plastic surgeon will discuss these possibilities with you in detail. Before the operation, you will receive a general physical examination. If you take certain medications such as aspirin, you will have to discontinue their use ten days prior to the operation in order to reduce the risk of post-operative bleeding. Smoking cessation four weeks before the procedure is important as well since this will reduce the risk of poorly healing incisions.

The operation

This procedure is carried out under local anaesthetic with sedation (you will be asleep). The operation lasts two hours. A silicone implant is inserted in a small incision inside the mouth and placed over the cheekbone to enhance it.

Recovery

You may return home a few hours following the operation. You will continue to wear the support tape and bandage for four days after the procedure. When the bandage is removed, the cheeks will still look swollen. It will take a week to ten days before the discoloration disappears. The swelling and certain irregularities can last two to three weeks. Patients usually have little discomfort after the operation. The stitches are removed four days after the operation. You will receive a prescription for an antibiotic that you will take for five days to prevent infection.

Risks

As with any operation, there is always the risk of infection. A nerve that takes some time to recover can mean that your upper lip will feel numb for the first few days. Other risks involve temporary inconvenience and a slight swelling of the cheeks.

Results

The final results will not be visible until a few weeks after the operation when all the swelling has disappeared. You will notice that the look of your face has improved due to the better proportions of cheekbones, cheeks and the rest of your features. There will be no visible scar, and the effect is permanent. A cheekbone implant can be removed easily, however, if needed.
