Chin augmentation

General information

Having a beautifully shaped feminine chin or a rugged masculine chin that is in good balance with the rest of the facial features is possible by having a chin augmentation performed that involves the insertion of an implant. Having a well-defined chin balances the facial profile and enhances the jaw and chin line while improving the proportion between nose and chin. The results are permanent but the chin implant is easy to remove if needed.

Who will benefit from this procedure?

Each person’s profile is unique. The proportion between the nose and the chin is the most conspicuous proportion in the facial profile: if the nose protrudes too far or the chin does not protrude enough, this disturbs the balance between these two features. Often, it is only a matter of a few millimetres that are the cause of this imbalance. Using an implant to bring the chin forward is a simple and very effective method of correcting this disproportion. The nose then looks smaller in proportion to the chin.

What to expect

A chin augmentation provides an improvement but not perfection. Neither should you expect that such an operation will solve any social problems or problems associated with a relationship.

Preparation

Much of the preparation for the procedure deals with determining which kind of chin implant is most suitable for you. Because there are various kinds of implants, a patient can choose to make the chin broader (more masculine) or narrower (more feminine). The plastic surgeon will discuss these possibilities with you in detail. The number of additional millimetres that your chin will be brought forward will also be measured and determined. Before the operation, you will receive a general physical examination. If you take certain medications such as aspirin, you will have to discontinue their use ten days prior to the operation in order to reduce the risk of post-operative bleeding. Smoking cessation four weeks before the procedure is important as well since this will reduce the risk of poorly healing incisions.

The operation

This procedure is carried out under local anaesthetic with sedation (you will be asleep). The operation lasts one hour. A silicone implant is inserted in an inconspicuous incision under the chin and placed onto the jawbone, thus bringing the chin forward.

Recovery

You may return home a few hours following the operation. You will continue to wear the support tape and bandage for five to seven days after the procedure. When the bandage is removed, your chin will still look swollen. It will take a week to ten days before the discoloration disappears. The swelling and certain irregularities can last two to three weeks. Patients usually have little discomfort after the operation. The stitches are removed between one and two weeks after the operation.

Risks

As with any operation, there is always the risk of infection. A nerve that takes some time to recover can mean that your lower lip will feel numb for the first few days. Other risks involve temporary inconvenience.

Results

The final results will not be visible until a few weeks after the operation when all the swelling has disappeared. You will notice that the look of your face has improved due to the better proportion between your nose and chin. The scar will be barely visible, and the effect is permanent. A chin implant can be removed easily, however, if needed.
