Calf augmentation

General information

Many people are dissatisfied with the shape and size of their calves. Some even avoid wearing skirts or shorts because of this. Calf exercises are not usually very effective. In some cases the problem may even be the result of a congenital calf defect. However, with the aid of calf implants the calf can be altered into the required shape by means of simple surgery. During this procedure one or two implants are inserted through a small incision at the back of the knee under the skin and fascia of the calf muscle.

The preparation

Two factors which affect the result of calf augmentation are the original situation and the enlargement required. You can discuss this, and the various shapes of the implants, with the plastic surgeon. Your general health will be examined before the surgery is performed. Some medication, such as aspirin, must be stopped two weeks prior to the operation. This reduces the risk of continued or subsequent bleeding. It is also important that you do not smoke for the two weeks preceding the procedure. Stopping smoking improves the chances of the wounds healing well.

The operation

Calf augmentation is carried out under local anaesthetic with sedation (you sleep through the operation). During the procedure an incision is made at the back of the knee and one or two implants are inserted under the fascia of the calf muscle. You will be given support stockings which must be worn for 3 weeks. The stitches are made with a soluble material and therefore disappear on their own.

The risks

As is the case with all operations, there is a possibility of continued or subsequent bleeding and infections. However, the risk is very low if you comply properly with the postoperative instructions. Calf implants can move about during the first few weeks, but the risk of this happening is also extremely low provided you follow instructions.

The risk of wounds healing poorly, or even bursting open again, increases considerably if you smoke.

After the operation

It is important to keep strictly to your bed on the first day. During the first three weeks you will wear support stockings and refrain from walking a great deal. The calves will be very stiff and painful at the beginning. Wearing inserts in your shoes to raise your heels, or boots with heels, will relax the calf muscles and make walking more comfortable. You may not carry out any hard manual work for the first six weeks. The recovery period is six weeks and after this all movements will again be possible. After 3 months you may once more participate in sports. The final result can be expected after 3 months, too. Most of the swelling will then have disappeared and the skin will have adjusted to the new shape of the calf.

The result

Beautifully-shaped full calves which balance well with your thighs. The scars may still be slightly pink during the first few months, but they are hidden in the hollow of the knee and will be barely noticeable.
