Nose correction

General information

It is possible to surgically modify the outward shape of the nose in various ways. The nose can be made smaller, the end of the nose can be made a more pleasing shape, irregularities in the profile of the nose can be removed and/or a crooked nose can be straightened out. It is also possible to reduce functional problems, such as frequent obstruction, which is often associated with headache. The shape of the nose differs significantly from person to person, so each case has to be assessed individually.

Procedure

Generally speaking, nose correction does not involve external incisions. The cuts are made inside the nose and are not therefore visible. In some cases, however, it is necessary to make an incision in the underside of the internasal septum (the material separating the two nostrils) or at the point where the nostrils meet the skin above the upper lip. Corrective nose surgery may involve modification of the bony material and/or the cartilaginous material (nose end, nostrils). More minor surgery can be carried out under local anaesthetic, but extensive nose correction requires general anaesthetic. In either case, it is normally possible to go home the very same day, but an overnight stay can sometimes be necessary.

Afterwards

After surgery, you are likely to feel some pain, which should not be too distressing. It is normally necessary to leave dressing material in the nostrils for twenty-four hours, during which time the patient has to breath through his/her mouth. Following the procedure, considerable swelling can develop in the face around the nose - affecting, for example, the eyelids. This swelling subsides after a few days. After the operation, dressings or a cast may be applied to the nose, extending up to the forehead. These can be removed after a week. The swelling visible on the nose after removal of the dressing or cast may persist for several months.

Risks

Like any form of surgery, nose correction entails a risk of bleeding, infection, abnormal healing, tissue necrosis, loss of feeling in the skin, diminished symmetry and other undesirable consequences.

Outcome

The changes effected by corrective nose surgery are permanent. However, not even the most practised surgeon can guarantee that the ultimate shape of the nose will be exactly what the patient was hoping to achieve. Occasionally, further surgery may be needed. The success of the procedure depends not only upon the plastic surgeon performing it, but also on the quality of the nasal tissues. In addition, it is important to appreciate that, while surgery can improve the shape of the nose, it is not possible to achieve perfection. In many cases, nose correction will increase a person's self-confidence and reduce unwanted comments.

Finally

The information presented above is of a general nature. However, corrective nose surgery is a highly individualised process. It is also one of the most exacting forms of plastic surgery. If you are considering nose correction, it is therefore important to explain your wishes carefully and discuss everything with the plastic surgeon. He or she can tell you whether your expectations are realistic and technically feasible. If you have any questions, we advise you to make a note of them, so that you do not forget them when you go to see the plastic surgeon.
