Eyelid correction

General information

Eyelid correction surgery may be carried out under local anaesthetic on either the upper or lower eyelids. It is possible to surgically correct problems such as bags or wrinkles under the eyes, or loose skin on the upper eyelids.

Bags under the eyes

The most common cause of bags under the eyes is a build-up of fatty tissue. This problem can develop even in comparatively young people and has the effect of making the eyes look tired.

Loose skin

As one grows older, the eyelids become looser and thinner, causing the skin of the upper eyelids to hang down in folds. Some people are inherently more susceptible to this process than others. It can reach the point where one feels the need to raise one's eyebrows all the time simply to see properly. This in turn means that the eyes become tired more easily. Loose skin in the lower eyelids can cause wrinkling here as well. In most cases, it is possible to correct such problems surgically, by removing the excess skin. Another option is a form of skin treatment known as chemical peeling. Our doctors can advise you as to what treatment is most appropriate for you.

What does surgical correction involve?

Excess skin can be surgically removed from the upper eyelids under local anaesthetic. The resulting scar exactly follows the line of the natural fold in your skin and is therefore almost invisible after a short time. The wounds are closed using stitches, which are removed five to seven days after the operation. Relatively little pain is associated with the procedure - most patients do not even require painkillers. Correction of the lower eyelids is normally undertaken at the same time as upper eyelid correction. The procedure can sometimes be more extensive, however, involving correction not only of the skin, but also of the underlying muscle and the fatty tissue. The incision is made immediately below the eyelashes, so that the scarring is almost invisible. The outcome is normally spectacular, making the face look much younger.

Afterwards

Eyelids swell and bruise easily, and the bruising can take some while to subside. We therefore advise wearing dark glasses in the period immediately following corrective eyelid surgery. Makeup can be used again once the stitches have been removed.

Risks and complications

With eyelid corrections, the risk of infection is slight. You may experience 'dry' eyes, but this will soon pass. Some people find it hard to close their eyes properly after corrective surgery, but this problem should rectify itself quite quickly. If problems persist after six months, they can be resolved by a further simple surgical procedure.
